For the first time in Turkey deputies come in hijabs
For the first time in the history of Turkish parliament, women members of parliament came to a meeting at the parliament in hijabs, Turkish media reported on Thursday.
According to the package of reforms, published on 30 September by the Prime Minister Erdogan, the ban on headscarves in public institutions, which came into force in the country since the establishment of the Turkish Republic, was lifted.
The decision came into force on 8 October. After that, women MPs from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to the meeting in hijabs.
Turkish society has been divided between supporters and opponents of this innovation. Opponents believe that such steps lead to the Islamization of the country and infringe on the principle of secularism in Turkey, introduced by the founder of the Republic, Kemal Ataturk.
On Thursday, the deputy from the opposition Republican People's Party (RPP) Dilek Atagun Yilmaz deliberately took off his jacket, under which was a t-shirt with a portrait of Ataturk. -02D-
