Hilal Mamedov Accused of Treason and for Inciting Ethnic Hatred
The chief editor of Tolyshi Sado and deputy head of the Talysh Cultural Centre, Hilal Mamedov, is facing new charges under Articles 274 (treason) and 283.2.2 (inciting national, racial, social and religious hatred, hostility and ethnic discrimination). Mamedov’s lawyer Anar Gasimli has said.
The preliminary investigation of the Mamedov case has been transferred to the Department for Grave Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office.
The press service of the Prosecutor General's Office confirmed the information and noted that this issue will be the topic of an official announcement.
Mamedov was arrested June 21 on charges of drug possession.
The firm view of local and international democratic community is Mamedov is persecuted on political grounds for active citizenship and human rights activities.
Mamedov is the author of an Internet video that has become popular, "Who are you? Come on! Goodbye!" about Azerbaijani meykhana (limericks). This video has caused great interest in the Russian media which have produced numerous interviews with Mamedov. -06B-
