Is the arrest of Sadigov and Zeynalli justified? - comment by a lawyer
Baku/12.09.22/Turan: The very fact of the arrest of lawyer Elchin Sadigov at 4 am is an indicator of the lack of conditions in Azerbaijan for professional advocacy. This is how Alesker Mammadli, an expert in the field of law, commented on the arrest of lawyer Elchin Sadigov.
He drew attention to the fact that Sadigov has been specializing in human rights for many years, dealing with cases of political prisoners and other citizens whose rights are grossly violated.
The hasty, overnight arrest of Sadigov indicates that someone is worried about his activities. Moreover, the arrest was accompanied by a gross violation of his legal rights.
According to Article 7 of the Law on Lawyers, documents and evidence collected in the cases they handle cannot be seized by the investigation and the court. However, during a search in Sadigov's office, documents were confiscated in bags and boxes.
Mammadli considers Sadigov's arrest to be politically motivated due to his professional activities.
A similar approach takes place in respect of journalist Avaz Zeynalli, the expert believes. The arrest of the journalist of an Internet channel with an audience of 200,000 criticizing the authorities is also political in nature.
Both arrests are intended to prevent exposure of corruption in the country. According to Mammadli, the seizure of letters and appeals from citizens from the editorial office of "Khural TV" could have been aimed at taking possession of their contacts.
Lawyer and journalistic activities provide for ensuring their inviolability and secrecy of correspondence, - he concluded.-16D06-
