Journalists and Activists Call for Release of Mehman Huseynov
Baku / 07/30/18 / Turan: A group of journalists and human rights activists today came to the Penitentiary Service to present an appeal to the leadership of this agency with a request to allow blogger Mehman Huseynov to meet with his seriously ill mother Firangiz Huseynova.
The journalists were received by Mehman Sadygov, head of the Public Relations Department of the Penitentiary Service. He said that lawyers also applied to the Penitentiary Service.
However, Sadigov recommended that they apply to the Ministry of Justice. After that, the journalists sent telegrams to the Ministry of Justice and the Penitentiary Service.
On July 15, the mother of Mehman Huseynov Firangiz Huseynova was hospitalized with a heart attack in the intensive care unit of the Oil Workers Hospital. She is connected to the respirator. The state of her health is characterized as severe.
On July 18, lawyers appealed to the Penitentiary Service for the temporary release of her son M. Huseynov. However, they were not given any answer.
The blogger and chairman of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, Mehman Huseynov, was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment on March 3, 2017, on libel charges based on a complaint filed by the head of the Nasimi police, Musa Musayev. The reason for the claim was Huseynov's allegations of torture against him in this department.
Huseynov was arrested after he published a number of video reports about the facts of corruption among high-ranking officials and MPs.
International organizations sharply criticized the arrest of Huseynov and demanded his release. -03B06-
