Man Who Beat Oppositionists Daughter Gets Off with Administrative Arrest
Baku / 02.05.19 / Turan: The Baku Court of Appeal upheld the decision on administrative arrest of Tural Garayev, who beat the 14-year-old daughter of the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Fuad Gahramanli, for 15 days.
The girl"s parents do not agree with the court"s decision and believe that Garayev was given a too mild sentence. They insist on bringing Garayev to criminal responsibility.
The daughter of the PFPA deputy chairman was attacked on April 17 in front of the Elmler Akademiyasy metro station. Garayev hit her in the face and insulted her, accusing the teenager's parents of working for the enemies of Azerbaijan.
The attacker was an activist of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party. After indignation in social networks, Garayev was detained and on April 18, the court arrested him for 15 days for "disorderly conduct."
The girl"s parents found this punishment too mild. They saw a planned provocation in the matter and filed an appeal. They asked the court to objectively investigate the case and instruct law enforcement agencies to begin a criminal case. However, at the trial, Tural Garayev not only did not admit his guilt, but on the contrary justified his violence.
"They are traitors. They oppose statehood and seek to destroy our country. I am a loyal soldier of my President and my Vice President. I am proud of this," Garayev said.
The defense filed petitions to review two videos and attach them to the case. On one video there is footage of the incident. On the other hand, Garayev admits that he used force against the teenager and justifies this by saying that "she, like her father, works for foreign special services".
The court dismissed the complaint.
The girl"s parents intend to apply to the European Court of Human Rights, as well as to law enforcement agencies to start a criminal case. Experts believe that the police incorrectly qualified Garayev"s actions as "petty hooliganism." In this case, there are signs of a criminal offense, since hooligan actions were accompanied by threats and violence, as well as deliberate damage to health. The fact that violence was committed against a teenager aggravates the crime. -06D--

Amid the bustling scenes of this year’s COP29 climate conference, a protest against whaling and deep-sea mining, organized by a group calling itself the FINS Initiative, drew significant attention from delegates and observers. However, questions have arisen about the legitimacy of the group, as an internet search yields little evidence of its existence beyond scattered mentions.

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
