Measles Surge in Azerbaijan Sparks Concerns Amid Vaccination Advocacy
In Azerbaijan, concerns have mounted over the escalating spread of measles, with reports of more than a month of widespread infections primarily affecting children. While local media has reported over five child fatalities due to the disease during this period, official statistics on the matter remain elusive. Authorities, however, underscore the pivotal role of vaccination in combating the measles outbreak.
According to the State Statistics Committee (SSC), the prevalence of measles seemed minimal in the country, with only one reported case in 2020, two in 2019, and 337 in 2018. In contrast, the Association for the management of medical territorial units (TƏBIB) paints a more nuanced picture, asserting that the current epidemiological situation with measles is deemed satisfactory. TƏBIB informed Turan that fluctuations in infection rates fall within a stable range, with patients seeking treatment for complications when necessary.
The Ministry of Health reported 284 measles cases from April to early December, emphasizing that the majority of those infected had either not received the vaccine or had only received one dose. Vaccine provisions, facilitated by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) since 2014, are said to meet the safety and effectiveness standards of the World Health Organization.
Critically, the shift from mandatory vaccinations in the past to a non-mandatory approach is highlighted by experts as a contributing factor to the surge in measles cases. Dr. Aydin Aliyev, a doctor-radiologist, voiced concerns about the weakened emphasis on vaccination, stressing its crucial role in preventing the disease. Recent events, he notes, illustrate the stark contrast between vaccinated children, who have not experienced distress, and the unfortunate outcomes faced by those unvaccinated.
Dr. Aliyev further underscores the importance of strengthening public awareness about vaccinations, acknowledging the current inadequacies in the country. He emphasizes that while good nutrition plays a significant role in building immunity, unfortunately, access to proper nutrition remains a challenge for many children in Azerbaijan.
As the nation grapples with this surge in measles cases, the call for renewed emphasis on vaccination campaigns and public awareness becomes increasingly urgent to safeguard the health of the population, especially children.

In 2017, the Sumgayit City Court ruled to evict the Aliyev family—refugees from Gubadli (Akper, Sarvinaz, Ramil, and two other family members)—from an illegally occupied apartment in the 12th microdistrict, Building 7A, Apartment 35. The court ordered the property be returned to its rightful owner, Samaya Aliyeva. However, the Ministry of Justice intervened, citing a presidential decree from July 1, 2004, which approved a state program for improving the living and working conditions of refugees. Under this directive, refugees without alternative housing cannot be evicted until they are provided with a replacement residence by the Executive Authority.
