Baku/19.07.23/Turan: The Shiite Muslims' mourning month of Muharram begins today, culminating in the 10th day of Ashura, which this year falls on 28 July.

On this day in 680 in the steppe near the city of Kerbela in an unequal battle with the troops of Yazid the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Abu Abdullah Al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abu Talib - the second son of Ali ibn Abu Talib and Fatima, the third Imam of Shiites) was killed.

The cause of the tragedy was a power struggle between the followers of the Prophet Muhammad. At the same time, it laid the foundation for the struggle between Shiites and Sunnis for influence in the Islamic world.

Ashura is widely celebrated in Azerbaijan, where Shiites traditionally predominate.

In the month of Muharram it is not customary to organise weddings and other lavish family celebrations, believers refrain from festivities and fun as a sign of mourning for those killed in Kerbala.

The Council of Caddies of the Caucasus Muslim Board called on the believers to refrain from self-abuse on the day of Ashura, a tradition that has been preserved since the Middle Ages.

Instead, they are invited to take part in a blood donation campaign.

Blood donation points are listed on the CMB website at www.qafqazislam.com. -05B06-
