One-man action in defense of Mehman Huseynov
Baku / 31.12.18 / Turan: Civil activist and blogger Fatima Movlamly held a single rally in the evening of December 30 in defense of blogger Mehman Huseynov. The action took place in one of the most crowded places in Baku - on the square near the monument to Jafar Jabbarli near the May 28 metro station due to the new accusation of a blogger who, in protest, began a dry hunger strike. Movlamy raised a poster with the slogan: "Ilham Aliyev, free Mehman Huseynov!" The girl said she wanted to draw public attention to the new fabricated charges against the blogger. "Mehman is innocent and we, the people, should support him. Mehman was arrested for wanting a good life, freedom and democracy for the country, the people. I demand freedom for Mehman and other political prisoners," said Movlamly. The action lasted about 10 minutes and attracted the attention of passers-by who listened to the activist, took pictures and made videos. There was no police intervention.
Mehman Huseynov was arrested in March 2017 and sentenced to 2 years in prison under a libel suit filed by the head of the Nasimi police. On December 26, he was charged with a new charge of beating a jail employee, and was placed in a punishment cell. In protest, he announced a dry hunger strike. Human rights activists are convinced that Huseynov is being persecuted for exposing corruption among high-ranking officials, as well as criticizing the authorities. -03B06--
