PPFA activist Razi Alyshov sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment
The trial of Razi Alyshov, an activist of the Ganja district branch of the Party of People's Front of Azerbaijan (PPFA) arrested two years ago, has been finalized in Ganja.
Ganja Court for Serious Crimes sentenced him to 5.5 years of imprisonment, finding him guilty under Article 234.4.3 (illegal sale of drugs on a large scale) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
According to the verdict, Alyshov was involved in drug trafficking together with another Ganja resident, Vugar Jafarov, who received a 6.5-year prison sentence.
However, according to the PPFA, Jafarov suffers from a mental illness and received treatment in the form of psychotropic drugs.
Alyshov himself said he was arrested on trumped-up and politically motivated charges. The defense intends to appeal the verdict.
The PPFA noted that other members of the Party - Shahin Hajiyev, Elnur Hasanov, Sahib Mammadzadeh, Mehman Aliyev - are currently imprisoned on drug charges. In total, 12 members of the PPFA, who are recognized by human rights activists as political prisoners, are in detention.
