Press Review - January 12, 2018
The place of the Azerbaijan People"s Republic (APR) in the history of Azerbaijan, the growing threat to the manat, and the question who should put monuments in the country are the topics of today's press.
The newspaper Azerbaijan writes about the place and role of the Azerbaijan People's Republic in the history of the country. The author recalls that this was the first democratic parliamentary state in the entire Muslim East. The article also reminds that on May 16, 2017, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree according to which the APR centenary will be celebrated at the state level, and this year 2018 is declared the year of the ANR.
The newspaper Echo published an article titled These Monuments Required for Independent Azerbaijan. The author suggests installing monuments to people who played an important role in the development and establishment of the country - Mammad Emin Rasulzadeh, Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, Sattar Bahlulzadeh, Vaghif Mustafazadeh, Nasiba Zeynalova, Lutfi Zadeh, Academician Landau, musician Rostropovich, Alexander Dumas, and three Polish architects - Josef Goslavsky, Jozef Ploshko and a native of Shemakha and a graduate of the Petersburg Academy of Arts Yevgeny Skibinsky.
The newspaper Novoye Vremya published an article on the forecasts of the rating center Fitch, which believes that the manat exchange rate is supported by the currency interventions of the Central Bank. This means that the manat can again collapse, which is fraught with turmoil in the currency and financial markets. It seems that only structural reforms in the economy will improve the exchange rate policy of the authorities, since in the current form the situation cannot continue for long.

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
