Rashad Mejid appointed new Chairman of the Press Council

Baku/25.09.22/Turan: At the VIII Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists held on September 24, Rashad Majid was elected the new chairman of the Press Council.

He replaced Aflatun Amashev at this post, who was appointed editor-in-chief of the Khalg newspaper, a publication of the presidential administration, the day before.

Majid is also the editor-in-chief of the 525th newspaper, deputy chairman of the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan, a member of the Pardon Commission under the President.

The Press Council was established in 2003 as a body for self-regulation of the press and its relations with society.
However, very soon the Press Council turned into a pro-government structure supporting all restrictive measures against the media and repressive steps against independent and opposition journalists.

The press council was left by the media, who did not want to work “according to the rules of power.”—03B06-
