Residents of former Sovetskaya Street hold protest
About 5,000 inhabitants of the former Sovetskaya Street today held a protest rally in front of School 173 in protest against the government plans to evict them, paying lower compensation.

"We are offered a standard price - 1,500 manat, and we have families, who, according to the documents, have 10-20 square meters. Where should we go, what could we buy for 20-30 thousand manat? We require to provide us with adequate housing," said one of the residents.

The protesters were visited by the first deputy chief executive of the district, Samad Islamov, who tried to calm the crowd and said that no one would be forcibly evicted. "I am authorized by the leadership to assure you that no one will face forced eviction. Demolition will regard only those houses, whose owners agree to the amount of the compensation.

Everyone who does not agree with the proposed conditions or has any claim, can express this and their claims will be discussed and communicated to the management," said Islamov.

In turn, local residents believe that fair compensation is not less than 2.5 thousand manats per square meter.

They also demanded that the officials decide to evict in a civilized manner, based on the laws and decisions of the government and not violating the legal rights of citizens. In particular, they demanded compensation for the real property quadrature rather than the area recorded in old documents 40-50 years ago. They explained that most residents had extended their housing and paid for that; therefore those costs should also be compensated.

The residents also demanded that their MP came to them and listened to their requirements, and then handed the requirements to the Parliament.

Many of the residents were determined and demanded to march to the presidential administration or to the City Hall. Reinforced police tried to keep the most aggressive ones, offering them to gather in a school and to listen to each other. However, the police exhortation did not stop the residents. They refused of compromises.

In the end, it was announced that the residents would wait for the reaction of the authorities over the coming weeks and would meet again a week later in the same place and repeat their demands.

Recall that the authorities plan to demolish the old housing along the former Sovetskaya Street that will affect at least 10,000 families. Most of these one-story houses were built over 100 years ago. And the locals do not want to move to the outskirts of the city. - 02B-
