Baku/26.05.21/Turan: On May 25, the Serious Crimes Court chaired by the judge of this court Afgan Hajiyev decided to resume the judicial investigation in the case of the main defendant in the Ganja case, Yunis Safarov.

It was decided to conduct a medical examination of the former head of the executive power of the city of Ganja Elmar Veliyev, who was recognized as a victim, for his sanity. By this decision, the panel of judges satisfied the petition of the lawyer Ilgar Rustamov.

As a lawyer of the accused Jafar Zalov, Rustamov believes that the accusations against his client are unfounded, since he did not commit a crime, and what was written against him in the case materials is falsification.

The lawyer stressed that although Elmar Veliyev was recognized as a victim, nevertheless, he was not questioned in detail. Only once was the initial testimony taken from him, which consisted of the following words - “I don’t remember, I’ll tell you later.” Subsequently, he was not interrogated, motivated by the presence of health problems. However, no medical examination was ordered to determine his real condition.

Other lawyers for the defendants supported this request. They also filed a motion for the reopening of the judicial investigation and the appointment of a medical examination. This time the state prosecutor did not protest against the petition. Thus, the trial was postponed until the results of the examination.

At the previous trial, the state prosecutor asked the court to sentence Yunus Safarov to life imprisonment, and to sentence the other defendants to imprisonment for 18-20 years.

On July 3, 2018, an attempt was made on the life of Elmar Veliyev, the then head of the executive power of the city of Ganja. A resident of Ganja Yunis Safarov wounded him and his bodyguard.

After that, a protest action in front of the Ganja administration building was scheduled for July 10. On that day, riots broke out in the city, during which two high-ranking police officers were killed. This was followed by mass arrests of believers and others.

A lawsuit has been filed for these events against 70 people. The defendants received from six to 18 years in prison. About 10 people were released on parole.

The trial in the case of Yunis Safarov and 11 others began in January 2020. -0-
