The court denied early release to the oppositionist
Baku/06.08.21/Turan: On August 6, the Khazar District Court of Baku denied the request of the Popular Front party activist Zamin Salayev (Alizamin Salayev) on parole in connection with serving more than half of the prison sentence.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan that the court considered the case online. At the same time, Salayev told the court that he had been on a hunger strike for four days in protest against not providing him with medical assistance, and for the last two days, he had been refusing water.
Salayev suffers from heart failure, and his condition worsened in hot weather, but he is denied admission to the prison hospital. In addition, a lawyer is not allowed to see him. The defense will appeal the court's decision today.
The activist's son, Ogtay Salayev, also stated that his father was on a hunger strike, but the Ombudsman's Office and the Penitentiary Service deny this.
The public relations department of the Penitentiary Service told Turan that there was no written appeal about A. Salayev's hunger strike. “If he has health problems, then there is a doctor in the institution and they will take care of him,” the ministry said earlier.
* Alizamin Salayev was convicted on April 20, 2020 by the Salyan District Court and sentenced to 2 years 3 months in prison on charges of "libel" and "insult" based on a complaint from a local police officer.
The reason for the lawsuit was a video broadcast by Salayev on the Internet, in which he, in a conversation with a police officer, accused him of inducing a 21-year-old local resident to cohabit.
Salayev was recognized as a political prisoner by human rights activists. —03B06-
