The date of consideration of the cassation appeal of Ali Insanov is determined
Baku / 05.10.17 / Turan: Consideration of the cassation appeal of ex-health minister Ali Insanov is scheduled for November 14 in the Supreme Court under the chairmanship of Farhad Kerimov.
The decision was made after the former minister sent a letter to the head of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan Ramiz Rzayev, where he protested "dragging out" with consideration of his cassation appeal, which has been postponed for more than three months.
The defense asks the Supreme Court to acquit Insanov, his lawyer Togrul Babayev told Turan.
Insanov was arrested in October 2005 on charges of attempted coup. In consequence he was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment for economic crimes.
In October 2016, 56 days before the end of the term of imprisonment, new charges against him were filed in the possession of drugs and resistance to the representative of power. In April 2016 the Garadagh court deprived him of his freedom for 7 years, and the court of appeal upheld the sentence.
On March 14, 2013, the European Court ruled on the unfair condemnation of Ali Insanov in the first case. But in the course of the second trial, the verdict was upheld.--0--

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
