The editor-in-chief and a retired colonel arrested
Baku/24.07.23/Turan: By court decision, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Hüriyyət” Vugar Mammadov and retired Colonel Elnur Mammadov, a former serviceman of the Ministry of Defense, were arrested administratively for a period of 1 month, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan.
According to the press release, the Department of Non-Criminal Proceedings of the department conducted an investigation into the fact of distribution by these persons on the Internet information prohibited for dissemination in accordance with the law "On Information, Informatization and Information Protection". Following the results of the investigation, the case materials were sent to the court.
By the court's decision, both were found guilty under the Article 388-1.1.1 (posting information prohibited for dissemination in an information resource or in an information and telecommunications network, or non-suppression of the dissemination of such information) The Code of Administrative Offenses of Azerbaijan and sentenced to 1 month of imprisonment each.
The message of the Prosecutor General's Office does not specify specifically what content on the Internet is in question.
The website of the newspaper “Hüriyyət” indicates the unreasonableness of the punishment of both persons.
At the same time, it is noted that the place and time of the trial were hidden and only after the fact was informed about the arrest of Vugar and Elnur Mammadov.
A source in the expert community reported that the reason for the punishment of these persons was the interview of Vugar Mammadov with Elnur Mammadov on the yotub channel “Hüriyyət TV”, in which they sharply criticized Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov and announced an increasingly limited powers and the imminent resignation of the head of the military department.
Elnur Mammadov is known for his harsh criticism of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense. On June 6, 2022, he was sentenced to 6 months in prison on a complaint filed as a private accusation by the head of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan. A lawsuit was filed after Elnur Mammadov sharply criticized the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, including the head of the main department for work with personnel of Elchin Khalilov. --06B--
