The level of the Caspian Sea has decreased by 114 centimeters in 10 years

Baku/02.11.23/Turan: Over the past 5 years, the level of the Caspian Sea has decreased by 69 cm, and over the past 10 years - by 114 cm.,  the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said at a meeting of the expert group to study the causes of changes in the level of the Caspian Sea and prepare appropriate adaptation measures.

According to the Minister, this situation affects coastal zones, as well as fishing, sea transport, port activities, construction and the population living in the coastal zone.

He noted that Azerbaijan proposes to plan and implement joint environmental monitoring in the Caspian Sea. "In the coming years, with a decrease in sea level, it is possible to lose some endemic species and reduce the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea. Therefore, this issue requires special attention," he said.

According to Babayev, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources regularly conducts expeditions to assess the ecological situation in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, study biological resources and the state of the sea, as well as possible negative impacts on the marine environment. ---0---
