Theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu released early
Baku/24.06.22/Turan: Theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of treason, was released early from prison on June 23.
Information about his release was confirmed by his relatives. At the same time, it was not possible to clarify the grounds for the release of the theologian. It is assumed that he was released on probation, having served ¾ of the term.
Mustafaoglu was arrested in December 2014 by agents of the former Ministry of National Security. He was charged under the Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code in the form of espionage in favor of Iran.
In December 2016, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Mustafaoglu denied the charges.
Human rights activists recognized Mustafaoglu, known as a researcher of religious issues, a TV host on religious topics and head of the Spiritual Values NGO, as a political prisoner. --06B--

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
