There are 99 names in updated list of political prisoners
Baku/28.09.22/Turan: The Union "For the Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan" has published an updated list of political prisoners. The list was compiled by the director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus and the head of the Monitoring Center for Political Prisoners Elshan Hasanov.
It includes the names of 99 people, the Institute for Peace and Democracy said in a statement.
The compilers of the list used the concept of "political prisoner" as sert forth by the PACE.
The previous list was published on June 6, 2022 and there were 100 names in it.
As Elshan Hasanov told Turan, religious activist Fagan Mammadov turned out to be new on the list (youtube host KIM TV) and Abid Gafarov.
Fagan Mammadov was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment on charges of drug trafficking. He was taking shirts with non-prohibited religious slogans from Baku to Ganja for the Ashura ceremony. Mammadov actively helped the families of the defendants in the "Ganja case", collecting and transferring aid to prisoners.
Abid Gafarov was sentenced to one year of imprisonment for calling on veterans of the Karabakh war to protest against injustice.
Note that theologian Elshan Mustafaoglu, who served time as a member of the Muslim Unity Movement, Teymur oglu Osmanov, and life-sentenced Elshad Mustafayev, who died in prison, are excluded from the list.
Political prisoners are classified into 6 groups:
Group No. 1 - journalists and bloggers - 4 people
Group No. 2 - members of opposition parties and movements - 4 people
Group No. 3 - political emigrants deported from Germany - 5 people
Group N - believers - 19 people
Group No. 4 - convicted in the Terter case - 27 people
Group No. 5 - convicted in the Ganja case - 27 people
Group No. 6 - life convicts - 13 people. -06D-
