There are only 12 political prisoners among the 634 pardoned (UPDATED)
Baku / 24.05.18 / Turan: The pardon order signed today by President Ilham Aliyev is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani People's Republic and the 95th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev. Pardon affected 634 people, out of whom 607 are released from prison. One person is released from punishment, the execution of which is postponed.
Nine convicted persons have been pardoned. Another 11 people were released from correctional labor. From the lists of political prisoners, only 12 people, mostly believers, fell under the pardon
Among them, Valeh Abdullayev, who was arrested on the eve of Eurovision 2012.
Davud Kerimov and Elshad Rzayev were arrested for participating in a protest against the ban on hijabs on October 5, 2012.
Nadir Babayev, Aliaga Gasimov, Hilal Jabbarov, Alesker Gurbanov, Shahbazov Fail and Shahbazov Natig were convicted in connection with the Nardaran events on charges of illegal possession of weapons.
The activist of the Popular Front Party Elnur Farajev, who suffers from an oncological disease, is also being released. The writer Sadai Shekerly also fell under pardon. Among the pardoned, there is not a single journalist or well-known political figure, as well as religious leaders.
According to the Civil Society Working Group on Political Prisoners, their total number is 142 people. According to the Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners, the number of political prisoners in the country is 161.-06D-

A pardon decree with names of 600 prisoners issued
Baku/24.05.18/Turan: On the afternoon of May 24, the head of state signed a decree to pardon 600 prisoners. Although the decree has not yet been published, however, sources in the Clemency Commission reported that among the pardoned there are 12 political prisoners. Specific names are not disclosed. It is expected that the document will appear in the public domain in the near future. -02D-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony.
