Results of the Biden-Putin summit and US-Azerbaijan relations
Baku/19.06.21/Turan: The results of the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16 in Geneva are analyzed in the "Difficult Question" program of the Turan agency by journalist Alekper Raufoglu, who lives in the United States.
First, Raufoglu noted that, contrary to his custom, Putin was not late for the meeting. This moment, as well as Putin's assessments following the meeting, indicate how important this meeting was for the Russian president.
As for Biden, prior to the meeting with the Russian president he attended the NATO summit. Obviously, this was done in order to demonstrate that the United States represents a common position with its allies, the journalist believes.
Raufoglu noted that during the meeting, Biden tried to convey to his colleague 3 main factors that the White House highlights in relations with the Kremlin:
- The first is to confirm leadership in the world;
- Second, the United States strives for strategic stability in relations with Russia. The talk is about the existence of such methods of war that will not bring success to any of the opposing sides.
In particular, in recent years, mutual accusations of cyberattacks have been increasingly heard. During a meeting with Putin, Biden warned Moscow against cyberattacks on important infrastructures (the US President named 16 such structures). He made it clear that this would entail a response in military or other form.
During the NATO summit in Brussels an amendment was made in the Article 5 of the Charter of the organization, according to which, not only an armed attack, but also a cyberattack on one or more members of the Alliance will be considered as an attack on them as a whole;
Third, Russia will have to come to terms with the fact that the United States will voice issues related to human rights and demand their observance, and without this dialogue is impossible.
The Karabakh issue was not touched upon. Several days ago, during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Biden raised the issue of Karabakh. In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron discussed this topic with Erdogan a few days earlier. Turkey's role in this problem raises questions from Western countries in terms of their interests.
According to Raufoglu, the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia is over, but peace never came. As a result of the war, Russia took the solution of this issue under its monopoly control. Thus, the war did not resolve this conflict and Azerbaijan would have to consider this.
“In order to achieve peace, we will have to resort to the capabilities of other members of the OSCE Minsk Group and, in particular, the United States. Moreover, they have those instruments of influence that Russia does not have,” the journalist concluded.-0-
