The Brussels agreements are general in nature. Everything was decided on the night of November 9-10, 2020
Baku/16.12.21/Turan: A meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with the participation of EU Council President Charles Michel was held on December 14 in Brussels.
Earlier, Charles Michel held bilateral meetings with Michel, Aliyev and Pashinyan, the topic of which was the search for a solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and the elimination of the consequences of the Second Karabakh war.
Before the meeting, Ilham Aliyev made a statement about the similarity of the Lachin and Zangezur corridors, which caused a sharp reaction from the Armenian side. Pashinyan called this a violation of peace efforts in the region.
Following the meeting, President of the EU Council Charles Michel made a statement in which he informed both leaders that the organization is committed to working closely with Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the conflict and create a climate of cooperation and trust for building a lasting peace backed by an inclusive peace. Can this meeting be considered successful for Azerbaijan?
Political observer Rauf Mirkadyrov answered this and other questions in the program "Difficult Question".
According to him, if the heads of state meet, then this is already positive. “Of course, it is better to negotiate than to fight. If it turns out that these were not negotiations for the sake of negotiations and were aimed at a concrete result, then this is already good. At the very least, this will lead to a reduction in tensions that still exist."
At the same time, the observer noted that it would be naive to expect a breakthrough in solving existing problems. Mirkadyrov also drew attention to the fact that the meeting was held with the mediation of the EU, which has too weak tools for resolving the conflict. Obviously, it is for this reason that the EU practically does not participate in the resolution of this conflict.
The expert also noted that another meeting between Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan took place in Brussels. This time through the mediation of French President Emmanuel Macron. “Before that, Macron met with Pashinyan. After that meeting, he tweeted:
“We will never leave Armenians. We will always seek solutions for a lasting peace. I call for the upcoming holidays to become a period of peace and achievements in the humanitarian sphere."
Such a remark was quite expected. France is on the eve of the presidential elections and it is obvious that this appeal was addressed to the Armenian community of France, which is quite strong there. Moreover, the pre-election situation there is far from favoring Macron and he is in dire need of electoral support.
However, although France is one of the leading countries in the world, a member of the UN Security Council, one of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, now its influence is not that great,” Mirkadyrov said.
Concerning the agreements reached in Brussels, Mirkadyrov noted that they are quite general in nature. “In essence, all the main agreements were reached on the night of November 9-10, 2020,” he said. –0--
