Why were Elchin Sadigov and Avaz Zeynalli arrested?
Baku/13.09.22/Turan: A few days ago, the editor-in-chief of the haggin.az portal, Eynulla Fatullayev, stated in his social network account that on September 3, A. Zeynalli demanded 20,000 manats from the family of imprisoned businessman Rasim Mammadov.
Avaz Zeynalli denied these allegations on the air of his YouTube channel, saying that they are slander. Lawyer Elchin Sadigov, mentioned in the indictment, also called the haggin.az website materials black PR. According to the lawyer, the statement that Avaz Zeynalli received money from the businessman's relatives is a lie. He stressed that this is nothing but an infringement on freedom of speech.
On Saturday evening, the Binagadi District Court of Baku decided to arrest journalist Avaz Zeynalli for a period of four months. The lawyer Elchin Sadigov was also arrested for the same period. Before that, searches were carried out in the houses and offices of the lawyer and the journalist.
Elchin Sadigov’s wife, lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova, tells about what happened in the program "Difficult Question".
She suggests that the arrest of Elchin Sadigov is because he is one of the few lawyers in Azerbaijan who undertake to defend persons persecuted for political reasons.
“Elchin Sadigov is not afraid to take on the protection of those persecuted for political reasons. Moreover, he does it conscientiously and at a high professional level. Sadygov won about 30 cases in the European Court. I believe that they decided to neutralize him in this way,” she said.
According to Sadygova, the lawyer's arrest, accusation of taking a bribe, search of the apartment and their lawyer's office without a court order, seizure of documents related to the cases of the defendants defies any explanation. But most likely this is due to his activities, Elchin Sadigov.
“Many cases conducted by Elchin Sadigov were resonant. He always carefully prepared, fought for his clients to the last and, where possible, brought the case to the European Court. He is a real fighter,” said the lawyer.
Sadigova noted that documents related to the case of Rasim Mammadov, the former head of the Baku Steel Company, who was Elchin Sadigov’s client.
“But there was nothing that would not be known to the investigation. During the search in our apartment and office, along with many other cases, documents related to the case of Rasim Mammadov were seized,” Sadigova said, stressing that the search was also carried out among her documents.
“They also searched my documents, which they were not entitled to. I am also a lawyer. They did not have any authorization to conduct a search. Obviously, the people I provide services to would not, under any circumstances, agree to the removal of these documents, since this is possible only on the basis of a reasoned court decision. I don’t know yet what documents were seized, since I was not present during the search,” she says. —0—
