Baku/10.05.22/Turan: The man who threatened the journalist Ayten Mammadova with a knife has not yet been found. The attack on Ayten Mammadova took place on May 8, at about 23:45 Baku time, in the apartment building where she lived. The man who followed her into the elevator put a knife to her throat and threatened her and her daughter, demanding that she stop covering the trial, which he did not name.
The journalist stated that the attack was related to her professional activities. Ayten Mammadova covered the trial of Ilkin Suleymanov, accused in the Narmin case. A criminal case has been initiated on the fact of the attack on journalist Ayten Mammadova under Article 134 of the Criminal Code (threat to kill or inflict grievous bodily harm).
The US Embassy, Reporters Without Borders, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro and PACE Monitoring Committee Rapporteur on Azerbaijan Stefan Shennak condemned the armed attack on journalist Ayten Mammadova. A group of journalists and representatives of civil society addressed an open appeal to President Ilham Aliyev and law enforcement officials with a request to quickly identify the person who attacked journalist Ayten Mammadova and those who ordered this crime and punish them.
Will the person who attacked the journalist be identified and found?
Mehman Aliyev, director of the Turan news agency, spoke about this in the “Difficult Question” program.
According to him, during the trial in the case of Ilkin Suleymanov, who is accused of murdering 10-year-old Narmin Guliyeva in the village of Dondar Gushchu, Tovuz region, there were serious contradictions and the version put forward by law enforcement agencies is not confirmed.
“There is no evidence proving Suleymanov's guilt, however, the case is replete with dubious details that the investigation cannot clarify. For this reason, the trial has stalled and cannot move forward,” Aliyev said.
They noted that journalists, and mainly Ayten Mammadova, write about this trial and therefore it is in the center of public attention.
“Independent media are monitoring this process and identifying and publishing the contradictions of the investigation. Therefore, the persons involved in this case are extremely concerned. Because this case must either be returned for a new trial and then the persons who fabricated this criminal case will have to be held accountable. Therefore, law enforcement agencies - the police and the prosecutor's office are not interested in returning this case for a new trial," he said.
Mehman Aliyev did not rule out the following version: “Those interested in a new consideration of the case could have attacked Ayten in order to draw even more attention to this process. As you can see, after the attack on the journalist, the US Embassy, Reporters Without Borders, the OSCE, etc. began to take an interest in Suleymanov's case. There may be various interested parties in this,” Aliyev said.
At the same time, he stressed that the investigation was conducted incorrectly, with violations and its results are doubtful.
“The case falls apart in court, because it becomes clear that during the investigation, the accused was tortured and, unable to withstand them, slandered himself. Other persons also claim that they have been pressured by the investigation. There is no evidence to prove Suleymanov's guilt,” Mehman Aliyev said.
