State Statistics Committee Discussed Organization of Trade Statistics
The State Statistics Committee held a seminar on the problems of the organization of trade statistics today.
Government representatives and experts noted the need for improved statistical reporting in the field, coordination between the State Customs Committee, the Central Bank and the State Statistics Committee.
The Deputy Head of the Department of Trade of SSC Aida Ibrahimova said that the recommendations of international organizations (UN and EuroStat) were implemented this year in Azerbaijan, along with the actual performance of import-export operations in terms of money, using methods of measuring foreign trade on the basis of price stability. This allows you to define the dynamics of foreign trade in the quantitative measurement based on price fluctuations.
The participants noted that the application of the new method of calculation of import-export operations misleads the users and leads to different interpretations of the data.
The fact is that, for example, according to the State Customs Committee, in the first half of 2012 the volume of imports and exports totaled $ 17.1 billion, which is 1.4% less than in the comparable period of 2011. The State Statistics Committee, in turn, showed a reduction in the country's foreign trade in constant prices to 2011 at 7.7%.
In addition, the workshop noted that the Central Bank has its own approach to the measurement of the volume of foreign trade.
The representative of the Ministry of Economic Development expressed satisfaction with the calculation by SSC of foreign trade with the countries of the European Union. At the same time, it was proposed to organize trade statistics and other international economic communities, in particular, with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
An SSC representative was absent in the seminar. So he did not answer questions about the declared low prices for imported goods, which affects the real volume of the foreign economic relations of Azerbaijan. - 08C-
