Gas Extraction from Europe’s UGS Almost One-Third Higher Than the Five-Year Average

Gas reserves in Europe’s underground storage facilities (UGS) have fallen to 60%, with extraction rates since the start of the heating season nearly one-third above the average levels of the past five years.

According to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), since the beginning of the heating season (October 29, 2024), the EU has withdrawn over 41 bcm of gas from UGS. The average gas purchase price in Europe in December was $489 per 1,000 cubic meters, and for the first 20 days of January 2025, it was around $503.
