25th Anniversary of Occupation of Zangilan District

Baku / 28.10.18 / Turan: Today marks the 25th anniversary of the occupation of the Zangilan region of Azerbaijan by the Armenian armed forces.

On October 29, 1993, the Zangilan district with a total area of 730 square km, located outside the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of Azerbaijan, was occupied.

As a result of the aggression, the population of the Zangilan district, consisting of 85 settlements, was subjected to ethnic cleansing, many houses, industrial and agricultural enterprises, infrastructure facilities in the fields of education, health and culture, including a museum of history with collections of ancient stone monuments, were destroyed. 45,000 residents of the region have become internally displaced persons, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

At the same time, the objects of material and cultural and historical heritage of the Azerbaijani people, including archaeological monuments of ancient and middle ages, were destroyed.

The Republic of Armenia, violating the Geneva Conventions, is committing illegal changes of geographical names and illegal settlement of ethnic Armenians in the region.

Plans to pave another, already the third road for communication between Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia through Zangilan openly demonstrate the "unclean intentions of this invader state," the commentary says.

Resolution 884 of the UN Security Council strongly condemned the occupation of the Zangilan region of Azerbaijan, demanding the withdrawal of the occupying forces from the Zangilan region and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani party, as further stated, "supporting the intensification of international efforts to resolve the conflict as soon as possible, retains the right to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders, as well as violated the rights of its citizens," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said. -06D-
