A new moment in the investigation of the case of Mukhtarly

Baku/26.07.18/Turan: The imprisoned journalist Afgan Mukhtarly gave written testimony for submission to the law enforcement bodies of Georgia. The application was submitted to the Georgian Prosecutor's Office, Turan was told by the lawyer of the journalist, Archil Chopikashvili. The lawyer, who last year investigated the case of Afgan Mukhtarly in Georgia, said he has no confirmation of the progress in the investigation. "We always received explanations that the investigation was delayed because the Georgian side could not get Mukhtarly's testimony, and the prosecutor's office stated that the Azerbaijani side did not respond to the relevant appeals. In this regard, we submitted testimony written personally by A. Mukhtarly to the Georgian Prosecutor's Office," said the lawyer. Last month, the journalist sent his testimony, which was certified by a notary in Georgia and sent to the Georgian Prosecutor's Office.

As for the content of the testimony, the lawyer said that Mukhtarly wrote in detail about what had happened to him and explained all the possible questions that the investigation might be interested in.

The lawyer stated that in connection with the evidence submitted to the prosecutor's office, further actions regarding the investigation of the Mukhtarly case could follow.

It should be reminded that the harsh critic of the Azerbaijani government, Afgan Mukhtarli, was kidnapped in the center of Tbilisi on May 29, 2017, the next day he was arrested in Baku. The authorities accused him of illegal border crossing and smuggling.

However, the journalist himself told the lawyer that he was caught and beaten by Georgian police, taken to the border and handed over to Azerbaijani representatives.

At the border checkpoint, 10 thousand euros were planted into his pocket, what later was presented as smuggling money.

An international scandal began on this fact and the Georgian authorities were forced to make excuses. President Georgi Margvelashvili accused the government of complicity in the kidnapping. Prime Minister Kvirikashvili recently resigned and it will be easier for the new government to explain how the kidnapping of a journalist in the center of Tbilisi could have happened. -0--
