Aliyev Calls for UN Security Council Reform, Containment of Armenia
Baku / 22.09.20 / Turan: Ilham Aliyev spoke on September 21 in a video format at a high-level meeting within the framework of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in the rank of Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement and President of Azerbaijan.
As chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, Aliyev stood up for reform in the UN Security Council.
“We call for reforms in the UN Security Council to strengthen and modernize the UN, revitalize the General Assembly and strengthen its authority as a democratic, responsible, universal and representative body of this organization in the field of international law and security, as well as transform it into a more democratic, productive, effective, transparent and representative body that meets modern geopolitical realities,” Aliyev said, without revealing the essence of the thesis on reforms.
As President of Azerbaijan, Aliyev expressed concern about Armenia's military activity.
“Aggressive rhetoric and provocations demonstrate that Armenia is preparing for a new aggression against Azerbaijan. We call on the UN and the international community to restrain Armenia from another military aggression," Aliyev said, citing a number of reasons justifying his concern. This includes the radical position of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, expressed in the slogan “Karabakh is Armenia and that is the point”, military provocations and sabotage, the glorification of Nazism and so on.
Aliyev voiced the position that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict should be settled within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions. —0—
