Ambassador of the United States shares the concern for the fate of the arrested activist Z.Gurbanly

U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar has called on the Azerbaijani authorities to a fair and transparent investigation of persons which local human rights activists consider political prisoners.

"We expect the authorities to hold transparent and fair trial, based on material evidence," said Morningstar to reporters, commenting on the U.S. position on this issue.

When asked whether the embassy is taking any steps in relation to the deteriorating health of the arrested youth activist of NIDA Zaur Gurbanly suffering from thalassemia, the ambassador said: "We call for the humane treatment of all prisoners and try to do this. We call for the provision of the person (Gurbanly) with the highest quality of medical care," he said.

Gurbanly was arrested on April 1 on charges of illegal possession of explosives in an organized group. The young man suffers from thalassemia, and in recent weeks, the disease has progressed much. -16B06 -
