Another Opposition Member Arrested for 30 Days (Updated)
Baku / 09.04.20 / Turan: On April 9, the Binagadi District Court sentenced an activist of the Movement for Democracy and Welfare Vafadar Aliyev to 30 days of arrest.
The court found him guilty under Art. 535.1 (not subordination to the police) of the Code of Administrative Offenses, the activist’s lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev told Turan.
Aliyev pleaded not guilty. The defense will appeal.

ADR activist detained
Baku / 08.04.20 / Turan: Today, April 8, employees of the 7th police department of the Binagadi district police department of Baku detained Vafadar Aliyev, a member of the board of the Binagadi district organization of the Movement for Democracy and Welfare of Azerbaijan (ADR). He was taken from home to the department without explanation.
This VOA said the leader of the ADR movement Gubad Ibadoglu.
“The whole world is fighting the coronavirus, and the Azerbaijani government is using the situation and punishing the independents and dissidents. This must be stopped, Wafadar Bek, Shakir Bey, Tofig Bek, Ilkin Bek and other activists should be unconditionally released,” he said.
According to Ibadoglu, Vafadar Aliyev will appear in court on April 9.
Authorities have not yet commented on the detention of an ADR activist.
It should be noted that during the quarantine regime, another ADR activist Shakir Mammadli was sentenced to 15 days of administrative detention, 2 activists were fined and 3 activists were warned. —0—

According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper. The media outlet does not disclose the name of the "diplomat," only his initials – M.G.Ş. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
