Appeals Court Holds Ilgar Mammadov in Custody

Today the Baku Appeals Court did not release Ilgar Mammadov, the head of the Movement “Republican Alternative” (ReAl). According to lawyer Fuad Agayev, the court did not take into account the arguments of the defense that Mammadov is a renowned public figure, and is not going to hide from the investigation.

Lawyer Khalid Bagirov said that protection also applied for the return of the case to the Nasimi District Court due to numerous procedural violations and ignoring in the minutes of the meeting the comments of the protection at the first instance court. However, judge Faig Gasimov dismissed Mammadov’s appeal.

The lawyer said that complaint would be filed to the Strasbourg Court against the court’s decision.  In addition, a new judicial request will be filed to ask for detention in the form of house arrest.

Mammadov was arrested by order of the Nasimi District Court on February 4, and has been charged under the following Articles of the Criminal Code: 233 (organization of actions aimed at disturbing public order), and 315.2 (resistance to authority.)—16C06--
