Baku, Ankara and Tehran to Come Out with Unified Position at UN General Assembly on Jerusalem (UPDATED)
Baku / 20.12.17 / Turan: The situation around the recognition by US President Donald Tramp of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the US embassy to this city was touched upon at the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey held in Baku today.
"We discussed the issue of Palestine and Israel. We also discussed this issue (recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel - the editorial note) and we believe this issue could not be solved this way," Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at a press conference following the meeting.
According to him, the three ministers will come out with a common position on this issue at the emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly on December 21.
Mammadyarov did not go into details, noting that Azerbaijan's position on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been repeatedly sounded.
The Iranian Minister Javad Zarif called the meeting "productive and effective" both for the three countries and the region.
"We have an affinity for the historical and territorial matters. We continued our discussion of political cooperation," Zarif said.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu thanked his colleagues for supporting Turkey's position on Israel and Palestine.
"We support our Palestinian brothers," Çavuşoğlu said.
During the tripartite meeting, the sides discussed issues of development of economic cooperation and tourism. An economic forum is planned to implement the agreements reached.
Çavuşoğlu also said that Turkey intends to increase the volume of oil and gas imports from Azerbaijan and Iran
"The trilateral format will allow us to expand our energy cooperation," he said.
Concerning the Karabakh conflict, Turkey will support any decision accepted by Azerbaijan.
Armenia should first withdraw its troops from Azerbaijani lands and respect the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in order to normalize its relations with Turkey. -06D--

Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey Started in Baku
Baku / 20.12.17 / Turan: The fifth meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey, Elmar Mammadyarov, Javad Zarif and Mevlut Çavuşoğlu, started in Baku.
The Ministers will discuss trilateral cooperation and regional issues. Following the meeting, a declaration will be adopted.
This is the fifth meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the three countries in this format. -06D--

The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
