The top U.S. diplomat Antony Blinken on Wednesday tested positive for COVID-19, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, adding that the secretary was experiencing mild symptoms.
Blinken, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, has not interacted with President Joe Biden in person for several days and therefore Biden is not considered a close contact.
"The Secretary will isolate at home and maintain a virtual work schedule. He looks forward to returning to the Department and resuming his full duties and travels as soon as possible," the Department said in a statement.
Blinken was expected to deliver a major speech about China on Thursday, but Price told reporters it has been postponed, though he did not immediately name a new date.
Blinken’s Covid-19 case follows just a day after his appearance at the Department's Foreign Press Center where he met with a group of journalists on the occasion of Press Freedom Day.
"... We are and have notified those individuals who would qualify as close contacts. I was tested just about an hour ago and tested negative" Price tod TURAN"s correspondent during a daily press briefing.
