CEC Announces Results of Municipal Elections
Baku / 11.01.20 / Turan: The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan on Saturday approved the results of the municipal elections held on December 23, 2019.
As the CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov recalled, the elections were held for 15,156 seats in 1,606 municipalities. 41,462 candidates ran for these seats, including representatives of 13 parties.
According to the final protocol of the CEC, the elections were declared valid in 1,597 municipalities.
Due to identified violations, the election results were canceled in 9 municipalities.
The CEC did not disclose the party composition of the newly elected municipal councils.
However, on the evening of election day, the executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, Ali Ahmedov, said that its candidates received a majority of the vote across the country.
Leading opposition forces refused to participate in the election.
According to local observers, the elections were held in the absence of real competition.

According to a report by Turan correspondent, the discussions took place behind closed doors and lasted for over an hour. No statements were made to the press following the meeting. Furthermore, conference security prevented journalists from asking questions to the meeting participants.

She had been accredited in the "Green Zone" as a civil rights activist. From the moment she entered the conference area, a young man began to follow her.
