Charge against Ilgar Mamedov - Reaction to the European Court

The REAL organization issued a statement in connection with the nomination of new charges against the head of this structure Ilgar Mamedov.

The statement said that the charges against Ilgar Mamedov were added on May 1 by new unsubstantiated charges under article 220.1 (organization and participation in mass disorders accompanied by violence, looting and destruction of property), which is slander. Like the earlier charge under Sections 233 (public nuisance) and 315.2 (resisting the police), the new charge comes from the biased position against the main political rival. The statement authors regard the new charge as pressure on Ilgar Mamedov and political activities of his movement. Such an illegal decision indicates that the current presidential elections will not be held in an atmosphere of transparency and healthy competition. The authors of the statement remind about the start of communication in the case of Ilgar Mamedov between the European Court and the authorities of Azerbaijan and that it was after this decision that the government put forward a new charge against Mamedov.

REAL believes that such a quick response of the European Court to the Ilgar Mamedov case (quite a rare practice) was a surprise to the authorities of Azerbaijan and this is the cause of the nomination of the new charges against Mamedov.
