Baku / 13.08.18 / Turan: Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland welcomed the release of Republican Alternative Party leader Ilgar Mammadov from imprisonment in Azerbaijan. "The news that the Sheki Appeal Court of Azerbaijan today ruled to release prominent human rights activist Ilgar Mammadov after more than five years' imprisonment should be welcomed. We cannot accept political prisoners in Europe - innocent people should not be imprisoned, and the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights must be enforced," Jagland said.
The Sheki Court of Appeal, pursuant to the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, today revised Mammadov"s case and released him conditionally from the remaining part of the prison sentence.
Mammadov was arrested in February 2013 on charges of organizing protests in the city of Ismail and sentenced to 7 years in prison. -16D--

During the hearing, the investigator requested that the complaint be rejected, while Ibrahimov's lawyer, Aghil Laidj, pointed out the lack of grounds for keeping Ibrahimov in custody.

Arrested economist Fazil Gasimov has reportedly faced pressure after protesting the interruption of a phone call with his family on November 16. "The phone call was cut off, and Fazil demanded that the connection be restored. Then, Jalal Alizadeh, a detention center officer, along with his colleagues, forcibly removed Fazil from the phone room in the medical unit of the facility, tearing his jacket and dragging him across the floor before throwing him into a cell.
