Debate in Israel around the issue of "Armenian genocide"
Baku/17.05.17/Turan: Against the backdrop of the expulsion of the Ambassador and Consul General of Israel, the Israeli parliament again initiated a bill on the recognition of the "Armenian genocide". "There are no grounds, moral and historical, not to recognize the Armenian Genocide," Israeli Transport and Intelligence Minister Israel Katz said on May 16. He recommended recognizing the bill submitted by deputy Itzik Shmuli, Israeli media reported.
In turn, MP Itzik Shmuli said that the bill he drafted is in no way connected with the current aggravation of relations with Turkey, but in Israel they do not intend to listen to "sermons on morality from the Turkish butcher-anti-Semite," whose state is responsible for the genocide of the Armenian people.
The parliamentarian also stressed that the historical fact of the genocide has already been recognized by 29 states of the world. According to Shmuli, there is a broad consensus on the adoption of the bill in the Knesset.
In parallel with the deputy Shmuli, a similar bill was drafted by a deputy from the ruling party, Amir Ohana (Likud). The presence of two bills - from the opposition and the coalition - increases, according to experts, the chances of his passing.
In turn, Dr. Alon Liel, who previously served as the Israeli ambassador to Turkey, warned that the adoption of the bill would lead to an automatic rupture of Israeli-Turkish relations.
Against this background, the political observer of the Russian edition of "Sputnik Armenia" Arman Vaneskegyan recommended Armenia to appeal to the official Tel Aviv with a request not to raise the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide. In his opinion, the adoption of such a law is "a frankly bearish favor" for Armenia and its positions on the international arena.
According to him, the official Tel Aviv is only trying to use the issue of genocide for pressure on Turkey, and "the recent shooting of the demonstration of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip" proves that "in Israel, even at the level of state policy, human rights are not placed in anything." -02D-
