ECHR accepted the complaint of Khadija Ismailova as priority

The European Court of Human Rights accepted a complaint of Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova as priority. The Azerbaijani government is obliged to  answer the questions of the ECHR by  January 15, 2016, told  the lawyer Fariz Namazly. He noted that the complaint raises questions  on violation of Ismayilova’s rights under Articles 5 (right to liberty and security); 6 (objective trial); 10 (freedom of expression) and 18 (inadmissibility of exceeding the limits prescribed by the Convention of restrictions on rights.)

The lawyer stressed that the complaint is related to the illegal arrest of  Ismayilova in December 2014.

In the future, the verdict in the criminal case will also be appealed. Next week, defense  will appeal the verdict on September 1, according to which she had been deprived of liberty for 7.5 years.

The Baku  Serious Crimes Court found Ismayilova  guilty under Articles 179 (misappropriation and embezzlement), 192 (illegal business), 213 (tax evasion), and 308 (abuse of power.)

At the same time, Ismayilova was justified under  the Article 125 (inciting to suicide.)

Local and international human rights organizations believe that criminal charges are far-fetched and Ismayilova’s claims are  related to her journalistic investigations of corruption in the higher echelons in power. -06D-
