Elchibey Considered Privileges Excess

June 24, 2013 marks 75 years since the birth of the leader of the national liberation movement, the former president of Azerbaijan (1992-1993) Abulfaz Elchibey.

This anniversary is not marked on the state level, but his grave was visited by representatives of the National Council - an opposition political coalition, and the Popular Front.

In an interview with Objective TV (obyektiv.tv) the brother of the late, Almurad Aliyev said that he does not blame the government. "They are educated and adult people, they know better, although the merits of the former president in gaining independence is obvious,"  he said.
According to his brother, Elchibey since childhood was filled with ideas of national freedom. During his student years, and during university teaching young people spoke about the pages of history, which were silenced by the official Soviet propaganda.

There were a few dissidents (including Professor Khudu Mammadov), who gathered at Almurad's home.

During the first arrest of Elchibey in the mid-70s, the prosecutor asked the judge to sentence him to 12 years in prison, but the judge gave him three years, and Elchibey served 1.5. "This was the result of respect from law enforcement officers, including members of the local KGB, to the carriers of the national idea," said his brother. This attitude could be traced during the search in his apartment.

In the late 1980s, young people blamed Elchibey that he hang a portrait of Heydar Aliyev at his place, to which he replied that he hang it next to a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. It is a mark of respect to their merits before the nation, he said.

Speaking about the period of reign of his brother, Almurad Aliyev said Elchibey always was a modest man, and even ascetic. He unequivocally renounced the recommendations to create a group of courtiers, and also rejected the special state security and other benefits, considering all these excesses.

After retiring from the presidency in the ancestral village Kalaki, Ordubad Nakhchivan he was guarded only by the most dedicated members of the Popular Front and the representatives of the Turkish secret services in order to avoid conflicts with political opponents.

He died in Turkey, too, giving up an operation in Baku. Almurad Aliyev said rumors of poisoning Elchibey are far-fetched - Elchibey had long suffered from a prostate tumor, and when he left for the United States first, and then to Turkey in the summer of 2000, the irreversible metastases were present. - 17D-
