EP Subcommittee calls for immediate release of Leyla and Arif Yunus
On behalf of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), Elena Valenciano (S&D, ES) expressed her deep concern regarding the Azeri court decision to sentence Leyla and Arif Yunus to eight and half and seven years in prison respectively "solely for carrying out their legitimate human rights work in a country where the suppression of dissenting voices has increased dramatically over the past few years."
"I firmly condemn this sentence taking into account the irregularities reported during the judicial process" she added.
At the same time, she strongly urged the authorities to release them immediately "as such a verdict is similar to a death sentence given the deteriorating health of both Leyla and Arif Yunus". -02D-
