Foreign Ministry Ignores Appeal of REAL
The movement REAL sent Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov an inquiry about the statements of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov. In particular, Seyidov said that no structure, including the Council of Europe, should become a means of pressure on the issue of human rights. The announcement came after the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe called on December 4 for the immediate release of the convicted leader of REAL, Ilgar Mamedov.
The appeal of the movement REAL raises the question: whether or not the statement of Seyidov reflects the official position of the government of Azerbaijan.
As the Executive Secretary of REAL, Natig Jafarli told Turan, a response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not obtained.
Recall that Ilgar Mammadov was sentenced to 7 years in prison on charges of organizing riots in Ismayilli on 23-24 January 2013.
On May 22, 2014 the European Court ruled that Azerbaijan violated presumption of innocence for Mammadov and violated his right to freedom. The European Court ruled that the government of Azerbaijan has to pay Ilgar Mamedov compensation of 22 million euros.
The leaders of CE, including Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland, repeatedly demanded that official Baku release Mamedov and stop his persecution.
Amnesty International recognized Mamedov prisoner of conscience. -16D04-
