General Kerim Veliyev appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan
Baku/23.07.21/Turan: On July 23, the President of the country signed a decree on appointment Lieutenant General Kerim Veliyev to the vacant post of Chief of the General Staff of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
Lieutenant General Veliyev Kerim Tofig oglu was born in Baku on February 9, 1961. He graduated from the Baku Higher Combined Arms Command School in 1982 with honors.
From 1982 to 1990, he has served as a cadet platoon commander, Assistant Chief of the Training Division, Senior Assistant Chief of the Training Division.
From 1990 to 1994, he studied at the Frunze Military Academy.
Since 1992, he has served as a deputy chief of the training department, deputy brigade commander, brigade commander, deputy commander of the front, Deputy Minister of Defense for combat operations, corps commander, chief of the Center for Military Science, Chief of the Department of Defense Planning Military Strategy in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
He was engaged in combat operations for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
He has received numerous awards and medals for commendable fulfillment of duties. He has been awarded with the “Azerbaijani Flag” Order by Presidential Decree dated 01.01.1994; the Medal for “For Motherland” by Presidential Decree dated 24.06.2005; the Medal for Distinguished Military Service by Presidential Decree dated 25.06.2012; and the “Zafar” Order by Presidential Decree dated 09.12.2020; the Medal "For the liberation of Jabrayil" by Presidential Decree dated 24.12.2020; the Medal "For the liberation of Agdam" by Presidential Decree dated 29.12.2020; the Medal "For the liberation of Gubadli" by Presidential Decree dated 29.12.2020.
His predecessor as head of the General Staff, Najmeddin Sadigov, was quietly fired at the very beginning of the Second Karabakh war without any explanation. According to unofficial data, the cause was a number of military failures at the beginning of the war. -02D-

According to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, officials from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office's Anti-Smuggling Unit have detained an Azerbaijani citizen with a large shipment of gold. The detention took place near the Vadi İstanbul shopping center in the Sarıyer district, where a taxi was stopped. During the search, 70 kg of gold was found. The Azerbaijani citizen in the vehicle claimed ownership of the cargo and also stated that he was a diplomat. The investigation by the prosecutor's office is ongoing, reports Sabah newspaper. The media outlet does not disclose the name of the "diplomat," only his initials – M.G.Ş. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declined to comment on the situation.
