Government Measures Must Inspire Public Confidence - Gambar

Baku / 10.04.20 / Turan: Problems in Azerbaijan with non-compliance with the quarantine regime in the framework of the fight against the Corona Virus pandemic are also associated with a lack of public confidence. This opinion was expressed to Turan IA by the head of the Center for National Strategic Thought, Isa Gambar, commenting on the statements by members of the Operational Headquarters under the Cabinet of Ministers about the non-observance by many people of the rules of the quarantine regime and, for this reason, a possible further tightening of its conditions.

According to Gambar, the authorities should create a public committee to combat the Corona Virus.

“The committee should include representatives of influential political forces, authoritative experts, so that the recommendations of this structure would be perceived by the population,” Gambar said.

In his opinion, it is necessary to release political prisoners, persons convicted of crimes not representing public danger or who have committed criminal acts by negligence, as well as those who have little time left before the sentence ends.

Secondly, the conditions of the quarantine regime should apply equally to everyone, without any discrimination.

Thirdly, most of the population, especially the socially disadvantaged, should be provided with material assistance so that people would stay at home.

Otherwise, the government will further alienate society to a dangerous point.

Therefore, the government must take urgent and right steps.

In turn, human rights activist Samir Kazimly believes the main priority of government measures should be to ensure the safety and health of citizens, and at the same time respect their rights and freedoms.

Kazimly considers it necessary to release from prison those convicted of crimes that do not pose a great public danger, less serious crimes, persons with health problems, and especially political prisoners.

However, in fact, authorities on the contrary continue politically motivated arrests.

On the other hand, the social isolation of citizens also creates social problems. Therefore, as the quarantine regime tightens, social support for the population should also increase. Otherwise, people left without money and bread, will find themselves in a hopeless situation and this could lead to negative consequences, said Kazimly. -16d06-
