Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan to Be Guided by Bandung Principles
Baku /25.10.19 / Turan: Azerbaijan during its chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement will build its activities on the Bandung principles, which imply respect for the territorial integrity of states, non-interference in internal affairs, protection of mutual interests, and the inadmissibility of violent border changes. This was announced today by President Ilham Aliyev, speaking at the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Aliyev noted the need to reform the UN and increase its role in solving international problems.
During its chairmanship, Baku will also advocate dialogue with other international structures.
Aliyev also spoke about the contribution of Azerbaijan to the fight against poverty, having assisted more than 90 states. Azerbaijan provides scholarships for free education at universities of the country to citizens of countries of the Non-Aligned Movement. In 2018, scholarships were awarded to 37 students from 31 countries.
Within the framework of the current summit in Baku, the NAM Youth Summit was also held, in which representatives of 40 countries took part.
Further, the President touched on the Karabakh conflict, recalling that as a result of the aggression of Armenia, the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 adjacent districts - 20% of the territory of Azerbaijan have been occupied for 25 years.
Armenia conducted ethnic cleansing on these lands, as a result of which 1 million people became refugees and internally displaced persons.
Armenia committed genocide in the city of Khojaly in February 1992, as a result of which 613 people were killed, including 106 women and 63 children.
The UN Security Council in 1993 adopted 4 UN Security Council resolutions requiring the immediate withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied territories. However, for 26 years, these resolutions have been ignored.
“Nagorno-Karabakh is an original Azerbaijani land and the conflict can be resolved only within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Aliyev also indicated that Azerbaijan pursues an independent policy. Regular military meetings in Baku in the US-Russia and NATO-Russia format are a testament to respect for this independent policy.
Aliyev also spoke about Azerbaijan’s participation in global energy security projects and international transport corridors. -06B-
