Ilham Aliyev Decides to Hold Early Presidential Elections
Baku / 05.02.18 / Turan: President Ilham Aliyev on February 5 unexpectedly issued an order to hold extraordinary presidential elections on April 11. He was guided by Part 1 of Article 101 of the Constitution and Article 179 of the Electoral Code.
It should be noted that the head of state received the right to personally appoint early elections after amendments to the Constitution were made at a referendum on September 26, 2016. At the end of last year, the Election Committee amended the appointment of extraordinary presidential elections at least 60 days before the voting day.
Earlier, the authorities said that the next presidential election will be held on October 17, 2018. What caused such an unexpected decision to hold elections six months ahead of the announced deadline is not known. -06D--
