Aliyev and Brian restore Azerbaijan-U.S. contacts (Updated)
Baku positively assesses the results of today's visit of U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James O´Brien. Such conclusioun can be made from the official statement on result of Ilham Aliyev's meeting with O´Brien.
Aliyev noted the importance of O'Brien's visit to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations and exchange ideas on regional issues, the press service of the President of Azerbaijan reads.
Aliyev recalled the rich history of relations between the two countries and cooperation in various fields.
Turning to the topic of Karabakh, he accused Armenia of not fulfilling its obligations after the 44-day war and sending mines, weapons and military to the territory of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan conducted an anti-terrorist operation, while putting an end to aggressive separatism and no harm was done to civilians and infrastructure during the operation.
"After the end of the conflict and the full restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty, there have been historical opportunities for peace, and the United States can contribute to this process, taking into account the new realities," Aliyev said.
James O'Brien, in turn, stressed that relations between the United States and Azerbaijan are deeply rooted and the two countries are good partners. He noted that the U.S. supports the peace agenda in the region, the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and continue negotiations on a peace treaty in Washington.
James O'Brien stressed that the U.S. supports the development of the concept of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, as well as the continuation of discussions on the opening of communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
At the meeting, the resumption of mutual visits was assessed as a positive step to promote bilateral relations. During the conversation, an exchange of views took place on regional issues of mutual interest, the press release said. -0-
