"Incredibly Irresponsible": U.S. Fires Back At Kremlin's Comments On Trump Assassination Attempt
The Biden administration on Monday fired back at the Kremlin's speculations over last weekend's assassination attempt against former President Donuld Trump, calling it "incredibly irresponsible," as the State Department put it, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
A top Kremlin official argued earlier without evidence that an assassination attempt that killed a spectator and injured two others last Saturday at a Trump rally was the fault of President Joe Biden and his allies. For now, there’s little information on the gunman's motivations, and the FBI has said that it has not yet determined his underlying ideology or motive.
Nonetheless, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying that “the atmosphere that has been created by this administration during the political struggle, the atmosphere around the candidate Trump, prompted what America is facing today,"
"Obviously those are incredibly irresponsible comments from the Kremlin, part of a series of irresponsible comments that we’ve seen them make. And of course, they’re absolutely not true," State Department's Spokesperson Matthew Miller told a daily briefing when responding to TURAN's questions.
Miller also reacted to similar comments of the Prime Minister of Georgia regarding the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, who was quoted as stating that "the Global War Party is not changing its methods".
"I don’t even know what that means..," Miller told TURAN's correspondent. "Obviously, the law enforcement authorities have spoken to this investigation, the things that they know and the things that they don’t know. And I understand that they will continue to make clear the results of that investigation as it proceeds," he added.
Spokesperson also reminded that the White House has asked the American public not to speculate, not to make irresponsible claims before we know the facts, "I think I would extend the same encouragement to foreign countries as well," he said.
Miller added: "We condemn this attack and all political violence, strongly and unequivocally, just as we condemn political violence in any country, and just as we have condemned previous acts of political violence in the United States, whether it be the attack on members of Congress practicing for a baseball game, the brutal assault on Paul Pelosi, or, of course, the horrific events of January 6, 2021."
The spokesperson concluded: "We know today that people around the world, governments around the world, have questions about what happened on Saturday, just as Americans do. And our message to them is simple: As President Biden has made clear, there is no place for violence in our democracy. Period!"
In the roughly 24 hours following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, President Joe Biden addressed the country on the matter three times, repeatedly calling for unity and condemning political violence of any sort.
