IREX stops activity in Azerbaijan
American NGO IREX (Council for International Research and Exchange) announced the termination of its work in Azerbaijan, where it operated since 1998. According to the statement of the Washington office IREX, the decision to close was made on September 30.
For six years IREX assisted development of the media, education, Internet, working with civil society and governments.
IREX hoped that its activities in Azerbaijan will be evaluated objectively by the people and the authorities, and will not believe some defamatory publications sent to the press.
IREX always aimed to help the development of Azerbaijan, and has always considered itself a friend to the country, reads the statement of IREX. -02D-

Tehran Abdullayev, an activist from the Surakhani District branch of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PNFA), has been placed in a detention facility for administrative offenders, his lawyer, Nemat Kerimli, reported after meeting with him on October 21. According to the lawyer, Abdullayev stated that he was detained for his political activities.
