MFA on 26th Anniversary of Occupation of Kelbajar
Baku / 02.04.19 / Turan: The Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan made a statement in connection with the 26th anniversary of the occupation of the Kelbajar district.
It notes that the offensive operation to seize the Kelbajar district, located outside the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, began on April 2, 1993, mainly from the territory of Armenia.
At the same time, heavy artillery, Mi-24 helicopters and Armenian Air Force aircraft were used.
As a result of the occupation, about 60 thousand residents of the Kelbajar region became victims of ethnic cleansing and were expelled from their native lands.
511 civilians were killed, and 321 were captured or missing.
Currently, residents of the Kelbajar district, whose number exceeds 70 thousand people, live in various regions in the position of internally displaced persons.
During the Armenian occupation, the ancient and rich material and cultural heritage of Kelbajar was destroyed, and the original architectural appearance of the monasteries belonging to the ancient Albanian culture was changed and made Armenian.
Natural resources and minerals of the Kelbajar region are illegally exploited. The Armenian Vallex group of companies registered in Liechtenstein illegally exploits the Garabulag copper-gold deposit near the village of Heyvali.
Since 2007, GPM Gold, which has been part of GeoProMining, has been illegally developing the Soyudlu gold mine. Satellite imagery indicates the expansion of work at the field.
The Vardenis-Agdere road that passes through the territory of the Kelbajar district is used to export natural resources from the occupied territories to Armenia and to international markets.
In addition, Armenia conducts illegal settlement in order to change the demographic situation of the region.
Following the statement by the Chairman of the Security Council of April 6, 1993, in connection with the occupation of the Kelbajar district, UN Security Council resolution No 822 was adopted. The document condemns the use of force to seize the territories and contains demands for the withdrawal of the occupying forces from Kelbajar and other regions of Azerbaijan.
After the adoption of the resolution, the OSCE Minsk Group prepared an "urgent action schedule" for the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied territories. However, the Armenian side refused to fulfill them. -06D-
